Planning a fishing trip to Alaska’s Kenai Peninsula this summer? Heads up—King Salmon fishing is completely closed on the Kenai River for the entire 2025 season. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) has officially shut down both the early and late King runs on the Kenai.
On top of that, new restrictions are now in place for Kasilof River King Salmon fishing—so if Kings are on your bucket list, make sure you know the updated rules before you hit the water.
At Alaska Widespread Fishing Adventures, we’re here to keep you informed so you can make the most of your 2025 trip. While Kings are off-limits on the Kenai, there’s still incredible fishing to be had, including limited hatchery King opportunities on the Kasilof and world-class Sockeye Salmon and Trophy Trout fishing.
🚫 Kenai River King Salmon Fishing – Fully Closed for 2025
Season Closures:
✅ Early Run: May 1 – June 30
✅ Late Run: June 20 – August 15
- These closures cover the entire Kenai River, from the mouth at Cook Inlet all the way upstream to Skilak Lake.
- All King Salmon fishing is prohibited—including both retention and catch-and-release.
- Any King Salmon caught by accident must be released immediately without removing the fish from the water.
❓ Why the Closure?
ADF&G’s 2025 forecast shows some of the lowest King Salmon returns in nearly 40 years—with both runs expected to miss critical escapement goals:
- Early Run: Falling short by over 2,300 fish.
- Late Run: Forecasted to miss by over 5,500 large Kings (34 inches or longer).
This isn’t a first—closures and restrictions have been common in recent years as the Kenai’s King stocks continue to struggle. Protecting these legendary fish now means more opportunities down the road.
🎣 Kasilof River King Salmon – Open, But With New Rules
Kasilof River King fishing is still allowed, but only under tight new restrictions from May 1 to August 15, 2025:
✅ Single, Unbaited Hooks Only
✅ Artificial Lures Only – No bait allowed.
✅ Hatchery Kings Only – Wild Kings (those with an adipose fin) must be released immediately.
2025 Kasilof River King Salmon Limits
📆 May & June: Bag limit = 2 hatchery Kings per day (over 20 inches).
📆 July: Bag limit = 1 hatchery King per day (over 20 inches).
✅ Remember: Hatchery Kings are missing their adipose fin (the small fin between the dorsal fin and tail).
🚫 Wild Kings must be immediately released.
