🚫 Kasilof River King Salmon Fishing Closed | July 10–31, 2025

Alaska Department of Fish & Game (ADF&G) Advisory
Issued: July 8, 2025
Expires: August 15, 2025
Contact: Phill Stacey, Area Management Biologist – (907) 260-2920

The Kasilof River will be closed to all king salmon sport fishing, including catch and release, from 12:01 a.m. Thursday, July 10 through 11:59 p.m. Thursday, July 31, 2025, in the area downstream of the Sterling Highway Bridge. This temporary closure is designed to protect struggling king salmon returns and support future spawning success.

❗️What Anglers Need to Know:

  • King salmon fishing closed: No targeting or catch-and-release fishing for kings.

  • If a king is caught while targeting other species: It must be released immediately and may not be removed from the water.

  • Gear restriction in effect through August 15:

    • From the river mouth to Tustumena Lake: Only one unbaited, single-hook, artificial lure may be used.

  • Crooked Creek remains closed to all sport fishing through August 1.

  • Kasilof River upstream of the Sterling Highway Bridge was already closed to king salmon fishing starting July 1 by regulation.

“King salmon runs across the Kenai Peninsula are significantly below desired levels,” stated ADF&G Area Biologist Phill Stacey. “In an effort to achieve the escapement goal and broodstock collection goals for Crooked Creek king salmon, it is warranted to close king salmon fishing in the Kasilof River.”
