But when is the best time to go? Let’s break it down!

Alaska Salmon Fishing Seasons

Alaska’s salmon runs vary by species, with peak fishing times spanning from May through September. Here’s what to expect throughout the season:

🟢 May – Early Season Kings

✅ The first run of King salmon (Chinook) begins to enter the Kenai and Kasilof Rivers.
✅ These are some of the largest salmon of the year, making May a great time for trophy hunters.
Lighter crowds mean a peaceful, early-season experience.

🔵 June – Peak King Salmon Action

The main run of Kings arrives, offering some of the biggest and hardest-fighting salmon.
✅ This is prime time for catching a 50+ lb Kenai River King!
✅ Sockeye (Red) salmon begin trickling in by late June, offering variety.

🔴 July – Sockeye Madness & Kings Continue

The second run of King salmon hits the rivers, giving anglers one last shot at these giants.
Sockeye salmon (Reds) arrive in massive numbers, making for fast-paced fishing.
Limit-out potential! This is a great time for filling the freezer.

🟠 August – Silver Salmon (Coho) Take Over

Silver salmon (Coho) flood the rivers, known for their aggressive strikes and aerial fights.
✅ Still plenty of Sockeye action early in the month.
Combo fishing trips for salmon and halibut are excellent this time of year.

🟣 September – Fall Silvers & Peaceful Fishing

Silvers continue their run, with cooler weather and fewer anglers on the river.
✅ Great time for a quiet, scenic fishing experience with beautiful fall colors.
✅ A fantastic month for fly fishing as well!

Best Time for Each Salmon Species

Sockeye (Red) Late June – Early August Fly Fishing, Flipping
Silver (Coho) August – September Casting, Drifting
