Important Regulatory Changes for King Salmon As the 2024 fishing season kicks off, Alaskan Widespread Fishing Adventures is committed to keeping our community well-informed about significant changes that affect Kenai River fishing. This year, following the Alaska Department of Fish and Game’s (ADF&G) announcement, there are crucial updates regarding King Salmon fishing that our anglers need to know.
Early-Season King Salmon Fishing Closure Effective from May 1 through June 30, 2024, there will be a closure of the early-run King Salmon sport fishery along the Kenai River. This protective measure is crucial for the declining King Salmon population, aiming to bolster future fishing opportunities. The forecast this season is particularly low, predicting only 2,630 large fish returning, marking it as one of the lowest in decades. During this period, fishing for King Salmon is prohibited, including catch-and-release. Anglers may still fish for other species using unbaited, single-hook, artificial lures, but must release any King Salmon immediately without removing them from the water.

Late-Season King Salmon Fishing Strategy Similarly, the late-run King Salmon will see a closure from July 1 through August 15, 2024. This decision follows the new Kenai River Late-Run King Salmon Stock of Concern Management Plan, aimed at protecting this vulnerable stock. Although the forecast shows a slight improvement over recent years, the numbers are still low, with only an expected return of 13,639 large fish.
